The Asian Games, often called Asiad, are a massive multi-sport event. They happen every four years for athletes from across Asia. This event is very important because it is the second largest in the world. Only the Olympic Games are bigger than this competition.

People love the Games because they show Asian skill and unity. The motto for the movement is "Ever Onward." This was suggested by Guru Dutt Sondhi in 1949. The symbol is a bright red sun with 16 rays. A white circle sits in the middle of the sun. This represents the warm and glimmering spirit of the Asian people.

Many different things happen during the Games. Athletes compete in many different sports and events. For example, the 2023 Games in Hangzhou, China, had 40 different sports. There were 481 finals held during that time.

Since 2010, host cities also hold the Asian Para Games. These are special games for athletes with disabilities. The Para Games happen shortly after the main Games end. They are similar to the Paralympic Games. However, the two events run independently from one another. This means they might be held in different cities in the future.

Long ago, there were different games called the Far Eastern Championship Games. These started in 1913 in Manila with six nations. By 1934, there had been ten of these games. However, the games stopped because of the Second Sino-Japanese War. After World War II, many areas in Asia became new, independent states. Leaders wanted to show Asian strength without using violence. In 1948, leaders from China and the Philippines talked about bringing games back. Guru Dutt Sondhi believed a new competition could show unity. He proposed the idea for the new Asian Games.

History shows that the Games have faced many hard times. In 1962, the host country, Indonesia, had political issues. They would not let Israel or Taiwan participate. This caused many groups to remove their support for the Games. In 1970, Seoul could not host due to a financial crisis. Thailand helped by hosting the Games in Bangkok instead. In 1978, Pakistan also had to stop its plan to host. Thailand stepped in again to hold the Games in Bangkok. These moments were difficult, but the Games kept growing.

Many nations have been part of this long history. Forty-six nations have participated in the Games so far. Nine different nations have had the honor of hosting them. Seven countries have competed in every single edition. These countries are India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Thailand.
