Articulation (music)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Have you ever wondered why music sounds different each time?

It is often because of articulation. Articulation is how a musician plays a single note. It changes how a note starts and ends. It can also change how loud or bright a note sounds.

There are many ways to play. Legato means notes are smooth and connected. Staccato means notes are short and detached. These two styles are opposites.

Musicians also use an accent. This makes a note louder or stronger. A tenuto mark tells a player to hold a note for its full length.

Players use different tools to do this. Wind players use their tongues to break the air. They might use sounds like "tah" for sharp notes. They can even use "double-tonguing" to play very fast.

String players use bows or their fingers. They can pluck strings with their hands. This is called pizzicato. They can also mute the strings to make the sound shorter. These choices help musicians tell a story through sound.
