Art criticism

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Art criticism is the study and discussion of visual art. It is more than just saying if a piece is good or bad. Critics look at art to find a rational way to appreciate it. They might use ideas about beauty or the theory of aesthetics. Some critics focus on the history of art made long ago. Other critics look at the work of living artists today. This helps people understand the meaning behind what they see.

There are many ways to perform art criticism. A critic often starts by describing the work in detail. They use words to translate the art so others can picture it. Then, they move into an evaluation of the piece. Some critics rely on their immediate feelings and impressions. Others use a more systematic approach. They might use technical knowledge or look at the social world of the artist. They try to find the artist's true intent through these methods.

Writing about art has a very long history. Early ideas about art can be found in the writings of Plato and Augustine of Hippo. During the Renaissance, wealthy patrons used evaluators to help them buy art. The specific term "art criticism" was coined by Jonathan Richardson in 1719.

He even tried to create a scoring system for art. He used seven categories like drawing and coloring. Each category got a score from 0 to 18 to find a final total.

In the 1700s, art became very popular in France and England. People went to the Salons in Paris to see new works. Writers like Jean-Baptiste Dubos and Étienne La Font de Saint-Yenne gained fame for their reviews. Later, Denis Diderot helped advance the field. He wrote about the Salon of 1765 to capture art in words.

In England, newspapers like the Morning Chronicle began reviewing art in the 1770s.

By the 1800s, art criticism became a real profession. John Ruskin was a very famous critic in England. He wrote a big work called Modern Painters in 1843.

He once criticized James McNeill Whistler very harshly. This led to a famous court case between the two men. In France, the poet Charles Baudelaire also wrote bold reviews.
