Arson is the act of setting fire to property on purpose. This includes burning buildings, cars, boats, or even large forests. Because it can be very dangerous, it is usually a serious crime called a felony. If a fire causes someone to die, it can be treated as murder or manslaughter. People who do this are called arsonists. If someone sets fires many times, they are called serial arsonists.

There are different reasons why someone might commit arson. One common reason is insurance fraud. This is when a person burns their own property and then lies to get money from an insurance company. Another reason is to hide a different crime, like a burglary. Some people may also have a condition called pyromania. This is an impulse control disorder where a person feels a need to set fires. However, most arson is not caused by pyromania.

Laws use different levels, or degrees, to describe arson. In many places, first-degree arson is the most serious. This usually involves burning a place where people are present, like a school. Second-degree arson might involve burning an empty building to claim insurance money. Third-degree arson often refers to burning abandoned areas like woods or fields. In New York, first-degree arson is a very serious felony. It can involve using an explosive device to start a fire.

History shows how people have worked to prevent fires. During World War II, arson was a big worry in the United States. Many firefighters were away fighting in the war, which left fewer people to help. This concern led to the rise of Smokey Bear. He became a famous face for fire safety and prevention. After the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, the U.S. also started National Fire Prevention Week. This helps teach people how to stay safe and prevent accidents.

Fire investigators work hard to find the truth about how fires start. They look for things called accelerants, like gasoline or kerosene. These liquids help a fire grow and spread very quickly. Investigators study these residues to see if a fire was an accident or arson. For example, the El Dorado fire in 2020 was caused by a smoke bomb. This was considered reckless burning because it was unsafe. Understanding these details helps keep communities safe from future fires.
