Arpad Elo was a physics teacher and a chess player. He was born in 1903 in Hungary. He moved to the United States in 1913. He loved to play chess. He was a very strong player in Milwaukee. He won the Wisconsin State Championship eight times. He was even put in the World Chess Hall of Fame.

Elo made a new way to score chess players. Before this, a man named Kenneth Harkness made a system. In 1960, Elo made his own math formula. His way was an improvement on the old system. It used a sound statistical basis. This means it used math to be more accurate.

The United States Chess Federation approved his way in 1960. Later, the World Chess Federation, also called FIDE, used it too. In 1970, FIDE agreed to adopt the Elo Rating System. At that time, fewer than 2,000 players used it. Elo did the math himself for many years. His work helped show how skilled players really were.
