He lived from 1871 to 1953. He studied math at several big universities. He also studied physics and philosophy.

Zermelo worked on a special kind of math called set theory. A set is a collection of things. He helped make rules for these sets. These rules are called axioms. Later, other thinkers added more rules. Now, people call this system Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory. It is a very common way to study math today.

He also solved a big puzzle about sorting sets. This is called the well-ordering theorem. This work made him very famous. In 1929, he studied how to rank chess players. He looked at how to compare two things at a time. This idea still helps many fields today.

Zermelo also thought about boats on the water. He wanted to find the fastest path for a boat. He looked at how wind and currents change the trip. This is known as Zermelo's navigation problem. He was a man who loved to solve hard problems.
