As of the 2022 census, the population was 588,000 people. Most residents in the county are Shia Muslims. The primary languages spoken by the ethnic Iranian Azerbaijani population are Azeri and Persian.

The climate in Ardabil is classified as cold semi-arid. This means the region experiences warm, very dry summers. However, the winters are long and can be bitterly cold.

The record low temperature reached −33.8 °C. Because of these extremes, many tourists visit during the summer months. They seek the milder temperatures of the warmer season. The city's geography also includes several notable natural features. There are mineral springs like Sar'eyn that are famous for their therapeutic qualities. Several lakes, such as Lake Ne'or, provide habitats for various water birds.

Ardabil has a complex and often difficult history. Some Muslim historians link its foundation to the Sasanian King Peroz I. He may have named it Shad Peroz or Shahram Peroz. The city's location near the Caucasus made it vulnerable to many attacks. In the 8th century, the Khazars captured the town after a battle with Arab forces. Later, the Mongols sacked the city in 1220. The city also faced frequent invasions during the Ottoman-Persian Wars. Between 1514 and 1722, the Ottomans often attacked the area. During the 19th-century Russo-Persian Wars, Russian troops occupied the town.

During this period, General Ivan Paskevich took the Safi-ad-din library to St. Petersburg.

The Safavid dynasty is deeply connected to the identity of Ardabil. Shah Ismail I was born in this city. He founded the Safavid Empire and unified much of Iran's land.

Although he was born here, he moved the capital to Tabriz in 1501. This move was made because Tabriz was more strategically located. Despite losing its status as a capital, Ardabil remained a political and economic center. The city has continued to grow through various historical shifts and changes in leadership.

One of the most important sites is the Sheikh Safi al-Din Khanegah and Shrine Ensemble. This site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It serves as the sanctuary and tomb of Shaikh Safi ad-Din.

It also holds the tomb of the empire's founder, Ismail I. The shrine became a major place of pilgrimage under the Safavids. The complex is a central part of the city's cultural and religious life. It draws visitors who wish to see its historic architecture and sacred spaces.

Ardabil is also world-renowned for its textile industry, specifically its carpets. The city is famous for trade in silk and high-quality rugs.

Ancient Ardabil carpets are considered among the best classical Persian carpets. One famous pair was made in the 1530s for the shrine. These carpets were commissioned during the reign of Shah Tahmasp. They feature inscriptions that describe the shrine as a place of refuge. One carpet was eventually acquired by a museum in London in 1893. These textiles represent a high level of historical craftsmanship and artistry.

Today, the economy of Ardabil is a mix of agriculture, tourism, and industry. The city hosts large industrial groups like the Arta Industrial Group.

This group operates large textile factories and produces materials like laminate flooring. The city also features an ancient bazaar with historic domes. This bazaar has been a center of activity for centuries. The combination of ancient traditions and modern industry helps define the modern city. Ardabil remains a vital part of the economic landscape of northwestern Iran.
