The Safavid dynasty is deeply connected to the identity of Ardabil. Shah Ismail I was born in this city. He founded the Safavid Empire and unified much of Iran's land. Although he was born here, he moved the capital to Tabriz in 1501. This move was made because Tabriz was more strategically located. Despite losing its status as a capital, Ardabil remained a political and economic center. The city has continued to grow through various historical shifts and changes in leadership.
One of the most important sites is the Sheikh Safi al-Din Khanegah and Shrine Ensemble. This site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It serves as the sanctuary and tomb of Shaikh Safi ad-Din. 
Ardabil is also world-renowned for its textile industry, specifically its carpets. The city is famous for trade in silk and high-quality rugs.
Today, the economy of Ardabil is a mix of agriculture, tourism, and industry. The city hosts large industrial groups like the Arta Industrial Group.
