As a vital hub, it is the second largest Kurdish city in the country. It also holds the position of the 20th largest city in Iran overall. The city is a significant center for Kurdish intellectual and cultural life. It is especially recognized for its deep traditions in music, poetry, and carpet weaving. In 2019, UNESCO honored this legacy by naming Sanandaj a Creative City of Music.

The geography of the city places it in a distinct landscape. Sanandaj sits between the Qishlaq river and Mount Awidar. The Qishlaq river is a tributary of the Diyala river. Mount Awidar acts as a physical barrier, separating the city from Hasanabad. Hasanabad served as the former capital of the Ardalan region. The climate in this area follows a Mediterranean classification, known as Csa. This means the city experiences very hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters. Temperature extremes are notable in the local weather records. The highest temperature ever recorded was 44°C in July 1981. Conversely, the lowest temperature reached -31°C in February 1974.

Understanding the history of Sanandaj requires looking at several different eras. The name "Sinna" first appeared in historical records during the 14th century CE. Before this period, the primary city in the region was Sisar. Sisar was also known as "Sisar of Sadkhaniya" or "Sisar of the hundred springs." Some historians suggest that "Sinna" might be a contracted form of the name "Sadkhaniya." In 1580, a ruler named Timur Khan held a land grant that included Sinna. Later, a local historian named Ali-Akbar Munshi Waqayi-Nigar suggested a different founding date. He claimed that Soleyman Khan Ardalan founded Sinna around 1636 or 1637. The city saw significant development under the reign of Aman Allah "the Great" between 1797 and 1825.

The demographic makeup of Sanandaj has always been quite diverse. The majority of the population is Kurdish, and they primarily speak Central Kurdish. Persian is also used for government, education, and communication between different ethnic groups. Most residents follow the Shafi‘i branch of Sunni Islam. Historically, the city hosted several minority groups that added to its cultural richness. There was a significant Jewish community that spoke an Aramaic dialect. There were also Armenian and Assyrian Christian communities living in the city. The Assyrians often belonged to the Chaldean Catholic Church and spoke a unique Aramaic dialect called Senaya.

Population data shows that Sanandaj has experienced steady growth over recent decades. During the 2006 National Census, the population was recorded at 311,446 people. This number represented 81,380 individual households. By the 2011 census, the population had risen to 373,987 people across 106,771 households. The most recent census data from 2016 measured the population at 412,767 people. This growth occurred within 126,240 households. This steady increase highlights the city's importance as a regional center in Iranian Kurdistan.

The economy of Sanandaj is quite varied and supports many different industries. Carpet making stands as the largest industry in the city. Other economic activities include woodworking, cotton weaving, and the production of processed hides and skins. The city also produces milled rice, refined sugar, metalware, and cutlery. Modern industrial facilities contribute significantly to the local economy. These include a petrochemical plant and a combined cycle power plant with a 1000 megawatt capacity. There are also factories for manufacturing tires, tractors, tiles, ceramics, and pasteurized milk.

Sanandaj offers various amenities for visitors and residents alike. The city is connected to the world through an international airport. For those traveling, there are several hotels ranging from 3-star to 5-star ratings. Notable 5-star hotels include the Laleh Hotel and the Jin Plus Hotel. For leisure, the Abidar Forest Park is a key location. This park is home to the world's largest open-air cinema. These features, combined with the city's cultural status, make Sanandaj a complex and lively urban environment.
