An archive is a collection of historical records or materials gathered over time. These materials can exist in many different mediums. They might be paper documents, digital files, or even physical objects. An archive can also refer to the specific building or facility where these items are kept.

Unlike a library, which holds many copies of the same book, archives often contain unique items. Most archival records are unpublished. They are selected for permanent preservation because they have enduring cultural, historical, or evidentiary value. They serve as a record of the history and function of an individual or an organization.

Archivists are the professionals who manage these collections. They use a field of study called archival science to organize and protect information. This science involves studying material technologies and organizing principles. Archivists must decide which records are important enough to keep forever. This process of selection can sometimes be a political act. Because archives hold the evidence of how societies function, the way they are managed matters deeply. The term "repository" is often used to describe the physical place where these records are stored.

The word archive has deep historical roots. It comes from the French word "archives." This word traces back to the Latin "archīum" or "archīvum." These terms originated from the Greek word "arkheion." In ancient Greece, an "arkheion" was the home or dwelling of the Archon. An Archon was a ruler or a chief magistrate. This was the place where important official state documents were filed and interpreted. The Greek root "arkhē" means government or office. It is also the root of English words like "monarchy" and "anarchy."

People have practiced record-keeping for thousands of years. Archaeologists have discovered archives of clay tablets in several ancient sites. These sites include Ebla, Mari, Amarna, Hattusas, Ugarit, and Pylos. These tablets date back to the third and second millennia BC. They are essential for learning about ancient politics, literature, and languages. The ancient Romans had developed archives called "Tabularia." The Justinian Code even included the idea that societies should have places to preserve records. In England, archival methods developed after 1066. The Swiss also developed archival systems after the year 1450.

Modern archival theory has many roots in the French Revolution. In 1790, the French National Archives was created. It was formed from government, religious, and private archives seized by revolutionaries. This institution possesses perhaps the largest archival collection in the world. Its records go as far back as 625 A.D. In 1883, Gabriel Richou published a major text on archival theory. He helped systematize the "respect des fonds" theory. This theory was first published by Natalis de Wailly in 1841. These developments helped turn archiving into a structured science.

There are several major types of archives used today. Academic archives are located in colleges and universities. They preserve the history of the school and its community. They might hold the papers of former presidents or rare books.

Government archives are managed by local, state, or national governments. In the United States, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the central authority. NARA has facilities in Washington, D.C., and College Park, Maryland. Many government archives are open to the public. People like lawyers, historians, and students use them to find facts. In the United Kingdom, the National Archives serves England and Wales. Other countries have specific offices, such as the National Records of Scotland. These institutions ensure that the official history of a nation remains accessible to its citizens.
