An archive is a collection of historical records or materials.

These items can be in any form, like paper or digital files. An archive might also mean the physical building where these things stay. Unlike a library, which has many copies of the same book, archives often hold unique items. These records are usually not published for the public to buy. They are kept because they have lasting historical or cultural value. They show the history and how an organization or person worked over time.

Archivists are the professionals who care for these collections. They use a field of study called archival science to organize information. This science helps them decide how to preserve and provide access to materials. Sometimes, choosing what to keep in an archive can even be a political act. Archivists must decide which records have enough value to stay forever. They work to make sure the history of a group is not lost. This job keeps the truth of the past available for the future.

People have been keeping official records for a very long time.

Archaeologists found clay tablets from the third and second millennia BC. These were found in places like Ebla, Mari, and Ugarit. These old tablets help us learn about ancient languages and politics. The ancient Romans had archives called Tabularia. The word archive actually comes from a Greek word. That word referred to the home of a ruler where state documents were kept.

Different types of archives serve different groups of people.

Government archives are often open to everyone. In the United States, the National Archives and Records Administration is a major one. People like historians, lawyers, and students visit these places to find facts.

Archives connect us to the stories of those who came before.

They act as a memory for our whole society. By looking at old letters or laws, we see how the world changed. Even the French National Archives has records going back to 625 A.D. This massive collection was created during the French Revolution in 1790. Whether it is a small school collection or a huge national building, archives keep our history alive. They help us understand how we got to where we are today.
