The archerfish is a truly remarkable tropical fish.

These fish belong to a family called Toxotidae. They are famous for a special way they hunt. Instead of just swimming, they shoot jets of water at bugs. This helps them catch small prey sitting above the water. Most of these fish live in freshwater streams or ponds. Some species are euryhaline, which means they live in both fresh and salty water. You can find them in places like India, Southeast Asia, and Northern Australia.

How does this water shooting actually work? First, the fish selects a target with its eyes. It rotates its eye to focus on the prey. Then, it uses its mouth to create a tiny groove. It also uses its tongue to make a narrow channel. The fish contracts its gill covers to force water through this path. This creates a jet of water that travels very fast. The water at the back of the stream moves faster than the front. This causes the stream to turn into a blob right before it hits the bug.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. In the past, people were not sure how to group them. They often put them in a group called Perciformes. Now, we know they are closely related to beachsalmons. They belong to a group called Toxotoidei. We also have clues from the past through fossils. A fossil named Toxotes beauforti was found in Sumatra, Indonesia. This fossil lived during the Eocene age. It looked a lot like modern archerfish but had six dorsal spines.

There are many different types of archerfish. There are nine valid species in the genus Toxotes. One is the banded archerfish, known as Toxotes jaculatrix. Another is the common archerfish, or Toxotes chatareus. This species can grow up to 14 centimeters long. The clouded archerfish is called Toxotes blythii. Archerfish are very accurate hunters. An adult fish almost always hits its target on the first shot. They can aim at angles between 45 and 110 degrees.

Young archerfish have a lot to learn. They start shooting when they are about 10 millimeters long. At first, they are not very accurate. They often hunt in small schools to help each other. If one fish hits the bug, the whole group benefits. They can even learn by watching other fish shoot. This is a form of observational learning. It is like how you might watch a friend to learn a new game. This clever behavior helps them survive in the wild.
