Arbitrage

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes, the same thing has different prices in different places. This is called arbitrage. People who do this are called arbitrageurs. They look for a way to buy something at a low price and sell it at a high price.

In school, experts say true arbitrage has no risk. This means you can make a profit without losing money. In the real world, there are always some risks. Prices can change very fast. This is called execution risk. If a trader cannot finish both parts of a deal, they might lose money.

Arbitrage helps the world of money work well. When people buy where prices are low and sell where they are high, prices move. The low price goes up. The high price goes down. This makes prices in different markets become similar. This is called convergence.

Arbitrage also helps with money from different countries. If a car is cheaper in one country, people will buy it there. This changes how much the money is worth. Eventually, the prices will be closer. This helps make things fair for everyone.

A trader might buy wheat in a farm area to sell in a city.
