This includes the Bantu-speaking Comoros and the Cushitic-speaking Djibouti and Somalia. The region covers a massive area of the Earth. These areas are connected by language and history. Arabic serves as the lingua franca, which is a common language used by different groups. While Standard Arabic is used by governments, people speak local versions in daily life. In the Maghreb, these are called Darija. In the Mashreq, they are called Aammiyya.

These local dialects often borrow words from other languages. For example, Maghrebi dialects may use French, Spanish, or Italian. Some also include Berber words. This makes the spoken language very rich and complex.

Diversity is a key feature of the Arab world. Most people are ethnically Arab. However, many other groups live there as well. You will find Berbers, Kurds, Somalis, and Nubians.

Even within the Arab League, languages vary. Somalia has Arabic and Somali as official languages. Djibouti uses Arabic and French. Comoros uses Arabic, Comorian, and French. In Comoros, Arabic has great religious significance. The most widely spoken language there is Comorian. This shows how different cultures blend within the region. It is not a single, uniform group of people.

History has shaped the Arab world through many stages. Originally, Arabs were a Central Semitic group. They came from the northern Arabian Peninsula and the Syrian Desert. During the 7th and 8th centuries, the region grew through early Muslim conquests.

This expansion brought many lands under Arab influence. For example, Iraq was conquered in 633. Egypt was conquered in 639. Later, the region saw the rise of great Arab empires and caliphates. The Abbasid Caliphate was a major power until Mongol invasions in the 13th century. The Ottoman Empire later controlled most of the region.

Modern political boundaries emerged from much later events. In the 19th century, Arab nationalism began to rise. This happened as the Ottoman Empire started to decline. After World War I, European colonial empires took control of many areas. This included British and French protectorates. Most Arab states gained independence after World War II. Lebanon became independent in 1943. Egypt gained independence in 1952. The United Arab Emirates became a country in 1971.
