Application software is a specialized category of computer programs designed for end-user use. Unlike system software, which manages hardware and coordinates resources, application software focuses on helping people complete specific tasks. It acts as the user-facing layer of a computing system. This layer translates complex technical capabilities into goal-driven workflows. This allows users to interact with technology without needing to understand the underlying hardware orchestration.

There is a distinction between system software and application software, though the line can sometimes be blurry. System software, like an operating system, runs the computer itself. Application software, such as a web browser or a word processor, runs on top of that system to perform tasks. In some embedded systems, like those in a microwave oven or a DVD player, the two types of software may be indistinguishable to the user. Even the legal system has debated this distinction. In the United States v. Microsoft Corp. antitrust trial, experts argued whether the Internet Explorer browser was a separate application or part of the Windows operating system.

Applications can be classified in several ways, including by their legal status. Proprietary software is protected by exclusive copyright. Users must obtain a license to gain limited usage rights. In contrast, free and open-source software, or FOSS, allows anyone to run, distribute, and extend the code. Some FOSS is released under a free license that may be perpetual and royalty-free. Even more open is public-domain software. This type of software has no copyright attribution or revocation. It can be modified and even sold without transferring any public domain property to a single subject.

Software can also be categorized by the platform where it operates. Native applications run directly within the environment of a computer's operating system. Web applications are different because they run inside a web browser. There has been significant debate regarding whether web applications will eventually replace native applications on mobile devices. While web apps have grown in popularity, native applications remain important. Often, the two types of software are complementary or even integrated into one another.

Another way to group software is by its scope, known as horizontal or vertical applications. Horizontal applications are general-purpose tools used by many different types of people. Examples include databases or word processors. Vertical applications are niche products designed for a specific industry, such as banking or manufacturing. Some companies use integrated suites to handle every specific aspect of a job. A software suite is a bundle of multiple applications that share related functions and interfaces. For example, Microsoft Office and LibreOffice are suites that combine word processors and spreadsheets.

History shows us that certain programs can change the success of an entire computer platform. In the late 1980s, the term "killer application" was coined. This refers to a program so popular that it increases the demand for the device it runs on. VisiCalc, a spreadsheet program, helped sell Apple II personal computers to offices. Later, email software was a major reason for the popularity of the BlackBerry. The term "app" also saw a massive rise in popularity. It became common after the 2008 introduction of the iOS App Store. This was followed by the Mac App Store in 2010 and the Windows Store in 2011.

The purposes of application software are incredibly diverse. They range from enterprise software, which manages large organization processes, to entertainment software like video games. Engineering applications, such as computer-aided design (CAD), help develop hardware. Media development software allows for digital animation and audio composition. Even software used to create other software is considered application software. This includes integrated development environments and HTML editors.
