This became very popular with the iOS App Store in 2008. People often call these small programs "apps."

Even more open is public-domain software. This type of software has no copyright attribution or revocation. It can be modified and even sold without transferring any public domain property to a single subject.
Software can also be categorized by the platform where it operates. Native applications run directly within the environment of a computer's operating system. Web applications are different because they run inside a web browser. There has been significant debate regarding whether web applications will eventually replace native applications on mobile devices. While web apps have grown in popularity, native applications remain important. Often, the two types of software are complementary or even integrated into one another. 
Another way to group software is by its scope, known as horizontal or vertical applications. Horizontal applications are general-purpose tools used by many different types of people. Examples include databases or word processors. Vertical applications are niche products designed for a specific industry, such as banking or manufacturing. The purposes of application software are incredibly diverse. They range from enterprise software, which manages large organization processes, to entertainment software like video games. Engineering applications, such as computer-aided design (CAD), help develop hardware. Media development software allows for digital animation and audio composition. Even software used to create other software is considered application software. This includes integrated development environments and HTML editors.
