Most pies are double-crusted with pastry on both the top and the bottom. The top crust might be a solid sheet or a lattice. A lattice is a pattern made by weaving strips of dough together.

Some bakers bake the bottom crust alone first to keep it from getting soggy. There are many ways to enjoy this treat, like eating it warm or cold. Many people serve it "a la mode," which means they put ice cream on top.

Making the filling involves several simple ingredients to create a great taste. Bakers use sugar and butter along with a thickener like cornstarch. They often add spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor. Lemon juice is also used to stop the apples from turning brown. You can use many different kinds of apples for your pie. Popular choices include Granny Smith, Gala, Braeburn, and McIntosh apples.

Some people even use dried apples if they do not have fresh ones.

Apple pie has a very long history that stretches back many centuries. Recipes for apple pie began in England during the 14th century. A famous old book called "The Forme of Cury" contains an early recipe. That recipe used apples, spices, figs, raisins, and even pears. In the 1500s, a Dutch cookbook showed how to make "appeltaarten," or apple pies.

These early versions were often baked in a traditional Dutch oven. Different cultures have kept these traditions alive for hundreds of years.

Different countries have their own special ways to prepare this dessert. In France, people make a Tarte Tatin, which is baked upside down.

This method makes the fruit become caramelized as it cooks. In Sweden, many people prefer an apple crumble made with breadcrumbs or oats. Dutch styles include a crumb-top version or a lattice-top version. In the United States, apple pie is a very famous symbol. It is so well-known that people even have a town named Pie Town in New Mexico!

Apple pie connects many different cultures through the simple joy of eating. In the American Midwest and New England, people often eat it with sharp cheddar cheese. In the north of England, people might use Wensleydale cheese instead. The English brought apple pie recipes to the American colonies in the 1600s and 1700s. Over time, it became a symbol of American pride and a popular comfort food. Whether it is served with custard or whipped cream, it remains a favorite treat worldwide.
