It was one of the most important roads in the ancient world. A leader named Appius Claudius Caecus started it in 312 BC. He wanted to help move soldiers and supplies to the south. This helped Rome win wars against the Samnite people.

Builders made the road very strong. They used many layers of stone and gravel. They even used lime cement for the first time. The top layer had flat stones that fit together tightly. Some people said the stones looked like they grew together. The road was built with a slight curve. This helped water run off into side ditches.

The road went through many places. It crossed the Pontine Marshes on a stone path. It went from Rome all the way to Brindisi.

Over many years, the Romans made the road even longer. It helped them rule much of Italy. Today, the road is part of a special world heritage list.
