The ballet is very important to American culture. It was first performed in 1944 and was a huge success. Copland even won the Pulitzer Prize for Music because of it. Today, the Martha Graham Dance Company still performs this ballet. It is considered an essential part of their shows.

The story takes place in a small town in Pennsylvania. It happens during the 1800s in a place called the Appalachian mountains. The ballet follows a Bride and a Husbandman as they get married. They celebrate their new life with their whole community. The dance shows many different parts of daily life. It shows people planting crops in the spring. It also shows the joy of a wedding day.

However, the story also has some serious moments. Themes of war, like the Civil War, bring worry to the town.

Making the ballet was a long and changing process. Martha Graham and Aaron Copland worked on the ideas for a long time. They changed the names of the characters many times. At first, the story was called "House of Victory." Later, Graham chose the title "Appalachian Spring." This name came from a poem by a writer named Hart Crane. Copland wrote the music while he was on the West Coast. He could not meet Graham in person during this time. He had to rely on the scripts she sent him.

Copland wanted the music to feel very American. He used a style called Americana to make it easy to enjoy. He even used a famous Shaker tune called "Simple Gifts." He described his own music as plain and folksy.

The original music was for a small group of thirteen musicians. Later, Copland made a version for a larger orchestra. This version is the one many people know today. The ballet features nine dancers in total. These include the Bride, the Husbandman, the Pioneer Woman, and the Revivalist. There are also four Followers who dance with the Revivalist.

The stage for the ballet looks very simple and artistic. A sculptor named Isamu Noguchi designed the set. He did not want to build a whole house on stage. Instead, he used an outline of a house to show the idea of a home. The set included a rocking chair and a small fence. It also had a tree stump used as a pulpit. Edythe Gilfond made the costumes for the dancers.

This simple style helps the audience focus on the dancing. It shows the "bone structure" of how people lived long ago.
