In ancient Egypt, many people believed in a god named Apophis. He was often shown as a giant snake. Some called him the "Lord of Chaos."

Apophis was the enemy of the sun god, Ra. Ra brought light and order to the world. Apophis wanted darkness and chaos instead. People thought the snake lived in the dark underworld. He might wait for Ra where the sun sets. He could also hide just before the dawn. Because he could be anywhere, some called him the "World-Encircler."

Many stories tell of the battles between them. One story says Ra fought the snake as a cat.

People thought the snake's loud roar made the ground shake. His moves might even cause earthquakes. To help Ra win, priests did special things. They held rites to protect Egypt from evil. They would build a model of the snake. Then, they would burn it. This was meant to keep the world safe from darkness. They even used spells to help the dead stay safe from the snake.
