He ruled from 175 BC until he died in 164 BC. He took the throne after his brother died. Some people thought he was a usurper. This means they felt he took power unfairly. He was the son of King Antiochus III.

Antiochus was a very rich man. He gave money to people in the streets. He also gave big gifts to strangers. Some people called him "The Mad." They said this because he acted in strange ways. He even went to public baths to meet people.

He fought wars against Egypt. He almost took over the whole land. But a man from Rome told him to stop. The Roman man drew a line in the sand. Antiochus had to leave Egypt to avoid war.

Antiochus also treated the Jews in Judea very poorly.

He made rules against their religion. He even changed their holy Temple. This led to a big fight called the Maccabean Revolt. This revolt was a struggle to protect their way of life.
