Anti-fascism is a political movement that opposes fascist ideologies and groups. Fascism is a far-right way of thinking that focuses on extreme nationalism.

This movement started in European countries around the 1920s. It became very important during World War II. During that time, many countries formed the Allies to fight the Axis powers. These Axis powers were generally fascist. Anti-fascism includes many different kinds of people and ideas. It includes groups like anarchists, socialists, and liberals. It even includes people with conservative or nationalist views.

There are two main ways people have practiced anti-fascism. One type is called revolutionary anti-fascism. These people often belong to groups like communists or anarchists. They want to change how society works entirely. They see both fascism and capitalism as enemies.

The other type is called counterrevolutionary anti-fascism. These people are often more conservative or liberal. They want to protect democracy and existing laws. Their goal is to keep or restore the political systems that existed before the war. They want to keep society stable and protect traditional institutions.

History shows how these groups grew over time. In Italy, fascist rule became the state ideology in 1922. This led to more people fighting back. Groups like the Arditi del Popolo formed in Italy between 1919 and 1921.

In Germany, the Nazis became the state power in 1933. This caused a large increase in anti-fascist actions. The Spanish Civil War was also a major part of this history. It happened before World War II and showed the growing tension. In many occupied countries, people formed secret resistance movements to fight back.

Many famous leaders played roles in this struggle. Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom was a key leader.

He helped create a front of different political groups. Charles de Gaulle of France also fought against fascist rule.

In the United States, President Franklin D. Roosevelt led a coalition of liberals and conservatives.

These leaders focused on defending democracy and constitutional order. They worked to stop the expansion of fascist powers. Their work helped shape how the world responded to the Axis powers during the war.

Anti-fascism did not end when World War II ended. It stayed active in places where fascist groups tried to return. In the 1980s, there was a new wave of anti-fascism in Germany. This was a response to neo-Nazis in the punk music scene.

This movement then influenced the United States in the late 1980s and 1990s. In the 21st century, the movement has become prominent again. It has grown as a response to the rise of the radical right. People continue to use these ideas to stand against extremist groups today.
