The Axis powers were a military group during World War II.

They fought against a group of nations called the Allies. The main members of this group were Nazi Germany, the Kingdom of Italy, and the Empire of Japan. These countries wanted to grow their own power and control more land. They shared similar political views that were far-right. Because of this, they chose to work together as a coalition. This alliance changed the course of history for many people.

The alliance did not happen all at once. It grew through many different steps and treaties. First, Germany and Italy signed a protocol in October 1936.

After this, the Italian leader Benito Mussolini used the term "axis." He said history would rotate around the Rome–Berlin axis. Later, Germany and Japan signed the Anti-Comintern Pact to oppose communism. Italy joined that pact in 1937. Other nations like Hungary and Spain joined later in 1939.

Leaders made many choices to build this group. In the 1930s, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini began talking.

At first, they had some disagreements about land in Austria. For example, Mussolini did not want Germany to take over Austria. After some tension, their relations grew better in 1935. This happened when Hitler supported Italy's actions in Ethiopia. In the East, Japanese diplomats also began talking to German officials. They wanted to find ways to work together against the Soviet Union.

By 1940, the alliance became much stronger and more official.

On September 27, 1940, the three main nations signed the Tripartite Pact in Berlin. This pact brought Germany, Italy, and Japan together for their military goals. At its largest point in 1942, the Axis controlled huge areas. They held land in Europe, North Africa, and East Asia. They did this through occupation or by setting up puppet states. This was a time of great change and struggle across the world.

Even though they were a team, the Axis powers were not perfectly joined. They did not have many big meetings between their leaders.

Because of this, they did not coordinate their plans very well. Sometimes, the goals of the different countries were actually different. They did not always agree on what to do next. This lack of teamwork made it hard to stay united. The alliance finally came to an end when they were defeated in 1945.
