He is best known for a very long set of books. The series is called A Dance to the Music of Time. It has twelve volumes. This work is one of the longest in the English language. The title comes from a famous painting by an artist named Poussin.

Powell loved to learn about his family history. He spent many years studying his family tree. He found that his family came from ancient Welsh kings. This research was so good that experts gave him a special family crest in 1964.

During the Second World War, Powell was a soldier. He served in the Welch Regiment. He also worked in the Intelligence Corps. This job helped him work with other armies. He even earned medals for his service.

After the war, he focused on writing. He wrote about many different types of people. His books show both high society and the lives of artists. He lived in a country home called The Chantry.
