He is most famous for writing a massive series of books. This series is called A Dance to the Music of Time. It contains twelve different volumes and is one of the longest works in English. Powell spent a lot of time studying his own family history. He was very interested in genealogy, which is the study of family trees. He researched his ancestors for many years to find their origins. He discovered that his family descended from ancient Welsh kings and chieftains. This work was so thorough that experts at the College of Arms were satisfied. In 1964, they granted him the right to use the ancient Powell family arms. His family history was even included in a famous book called Burke's Landed Gentry.

Before he became a full-time writer, Powell had many different jobs. He worked for a publishing company in London called Gerald Duckworth and Company. He also spent six months working as a screenwriter at a studio in Teddington. Later, he wrote reviews for newspapers like The Daily Telegraph. During the Second World War, he joined the British Army at age 34. He served in the Welch Regiment and later worked in the Intelligence Corps. He even traveled to Holland in 1944 to help with military tasks.

His life was full of interesting people and places. He attended Eton and later went to Balliol College at Oxford University. In London, he spent time in places like Mayfair and Belgravia. He was friends with many artists, writers, and musicians. He married Lady Violet Pakenham in 1934 at a church in Knightsbridge.

Powell's writing connects the lives of many different social groups. His twelve-volume series follows characters who move between high society and the art world. These characters are often based on people he knew in real life. The books cover the years between 1921 and 1971. He won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1957 for one of his books. Even though he was a great writer, he stayed curious about the world. He lived to be 94 years old before he passed away in 2000.
