Anthemius of Tralles was a gifted thinker from the Byzantine Empire. He was a mathematician and an architect.

He lived in the city of Constantinople. This was the capital of his empire. Anthemius was part of a very smart family. His father, Stephanus, was a doctor in Tralles. Anthemius had four brothers named Dioscorus, Alexander, Olympius, and Metrodorus. Each brother did something important in his own way. One became a lawyer and another was a famous doctor in Rome.

Anthemius used math to understand how light and shapes work. He wrote a book called On Burning Mirrors. This book helped people build surfaces that reflect light to one single point. He studied a shape called an ellipse. He used a special method with strings to describe this shape. He also studied a shape called a parabola. He used a focus and a directrix to find points on a parabola. These math ideas were very helpful for later thinkers. Even Arab mathematicians like Alhazen studied his work later on.

As an architect, Anthemius did some of his most famous work. He worked with a man named Isidore of Miletus. Together, they designed a huge church called the Hagia Sophia.

A leader named Justinian I asked them to build it. This happened in A.D. 532 after an older church burned down. Anthemius died early in this big project. He is also said to have helped fix flood defenses at a place called Daras. His designs for the church were very daring and original.

Some stories tell us how Anthemius used his skills for tricks. He was very good at working with steam. He once used leather tubes to move steam through floors. This made a sound like a small earthquake for his neighbor.

He also used a hollowed mirror to play with light. This could make bright flashes like lightning. Some people even thought he knew about gunpowder. These stories show how much he knew about science and machines.

Anthemius connects the worlds of math and building. His work on light helped people understand how mirrors work. His math helped people understand shapes in the real world.

The Hagia Sophia is still a very important building today. His ideas about geometry traveled to many different lands. He showed how math can be used to make great things. Even though he lived long ago, his work left a mark on history. He was a man who looked closely at how the world works.
