Antenna tuner

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A radio needs a special tool to work well. This tool is called an antenna tuner.

It connects a radio to its antenna. Its main job is to match the impedance. Impedance is a measure of how much a circuit resists flow.

Most radios are made to work with 50 ohms of resistance. If the antenna has a different amount, the power cannot move smoothly. This can cause the radio to overheat. It can also change how the signal sounds.

An antenna tuner can be inside the radio. It can also be a separate box. Some small tools are built into cell phones. Large radio stations use tuners they can adjust. People use an SWR meter to check these settings.

Tuners can use different parts to work. Some use a transformer. A transformer is a part that helps move power between circuits.

Other tuners use an L network. This is a set of parts shaped like the letter L. This network helps change the resistance so the radio and antenna match. Using a tuner lets one antenna work for many different frequencies.
