An antenna is a key part of radio tools.

It helps move signals between wires and the air.

When a radio sends a signal, it uses a transmitter. The transmitter sends electric current to the antenna. The antenna then turns that current into radio waves. These waves travel through space as electromagnetic waves.

When a radio wants to hear a signal, it uses a receiver. The antenna catches the power from a radio wave. It turns that power back into an electric current. This current goes to the receiver to be made stronger.

Antennas come in different shapes. Some are omnidirectional. This means they send or catch signals in all directions.

Others are directional. These are often called beam antennas. They focus waves in one specific direction.

In 1886, Heinrich Hertz built the first antennas. Later, Guglielmo Marconi made them useful for long distances. He used long wires called aerials. The word antenna comes from his work.
