A tuner is a device that finds radio signals.

It picks one signal from the air. This signal is called a carrier frequency. The tuner turns this signal into sound. This sound then goes to a speaker.

To find a station, you must tune it. You can use a knob or a keypad. This helps you find the right frequency. Most radio stations use megahertz to measure this.

Early tuners were very simple. One kind was the crystal radio. It used an antenna and a capacitor. A capacitor is a part that stores electricity. These were very popular around 1920. Later, tuners used vacuum tubes. Tubes helped make the sound louder. In the 1960s, people started using transistors. Transistors are small parts that replaced tubes. This made radios much smaller.

A tuner can also work for TV. A TV tuner finds signals in the air. It turns them into pictures and sound. Some tuners are inside a TV. Others are in a small box. These boxes connect to your TV. This lets you watch many channels.
