She is recognized for her significant contributions to the telecommunications industry and her historic journey into orbit. As a business leader, she co-founded several technology companies. Most notably, she served as the chief executive officer of Telecom Technologies, Inc. and later co-founded Prodea Systems. Beyond her business career, she has become a prominent advocate for the privatization of space. This concept involves allowing commercial companies to send people and equipment into space independently of government agencies.

Ansari's journey began in Mashhad, Iran, where she was born on September 12, 1966. As a young child, she often spent nights on her family's balcony. She would gaze at the stars with great curiosity. Her early life was marked by significant historical shifts, including the Iranian Revolution in 1979. During the subsequent Iran-Iraq War, she and her family had to take shelter in a basement. To comfort the younger children during these difficult times, she would narrate stories to them. In 1984, she immigrated to the United States as a teenager. She eventually earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and computer science from George Mason University. She also completed a master's degree at George Washington University.

In the professional world, Ansari became a leader in telecommunications technology. In 1993, she co-founded Telecom Technologies, Inc. in Richardson, Texas. She worked alongside her husband, Hamid Ansari, and her brother-in-law, Amir Ansari. The company specialized in softswitch technology. This technology allowed service providers to integrate existing networks with next-generation, application-centric networks. Using this software, companies could improve system performance and reduce operating costs. In 2001, the company was acquired by Sonus Networks, Inc. in a transaction involving 10.8 million shares of stock. Following this, Ansari served as a vice president at Sonus Networks.

Ansari's most famous achievement occurred in 2006 when she traveled to the International Space Station (ISS).

She originally trained as a backup for astronaut Daisuke Enomoto. However, when Enomoto was medically disqualified on August 21, 2006, Ansari was elevated to the prime crew. She launched on the Soyuz TMA-9 mission on September 18, 2006, from Baikonur, Kazakhstan. This flight made her the first Iranian person in outer space. She was also the fourth self-funded space tourist and the first woman to fund her own trip to the ISS. Her spacecraft docked with the station on September 20, 2006.

During her nine-day mission, Ansari functioned as a scientist for the European Space Agency. She conducted four specific experiments to advance scientific understanding in microgravity. First, she researched the biological mechanisms behind anemia, which is a condition related to blood. Second, she studied how changes in muscle mass might influence lower back pain. Third, she investigated the consequences of space radiation on the ISS crew and local microbes. Finally, she became the first person to publish a weblog, or online journal, from space.

She returned to Earth safely on September 29, 2006, landing in the steppes of Kazakhstan.

Ansari has used her platform to support the future of space exploration. She is a member of the XPRIZE Foundation's Board of Trustees and its Vision Circle. In 2004, she and her brother-in-law made a multimillion-dollar contribution to the foundation. To honor this donation, the award was officially renamed the Ansari X Prize. She also invested in a partnership with Space Adventures, Ltd. and the Russian Federal Space Agency. This partnership aimed to create a fleet of suborbital vehicles known as the Space Adventures Explorer. Through these efforts, she continues to promote the idea of commercial spaceflight for global use.

Her many achievements have earned her numerous prestigious honors. She received the Horatio Alger Award and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In 2009, she won the first NCWIT Symons Innovator Award for women in technology. Her alma mater, George Mason University, awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Science in 2012. In 2015, the National Space Society gave her the Space Pioneer Award for her service to the space community.
