Satrapi's life began in Rasht, Iran, in 1969. She moved to Tehran shortly after birth. She grew up in an upper-middle-class family. Her parents were politically active and supported leftist causes. Her family history includes royalty, as her maternal great-grandfather was Naser al-Din Shah Qajar. He ruled Iran from 1848 to 1896. This background shaped her early understanding of power and governance.

The Iranian Revolution of 1979 changed her life significantly. Following the revolution, Islamic fundamentalists took power in Iran. Satrapi witnessed the growing brutalities of various regimes. Many of her friends and family members faced persecution or arrest. Her paternal uncle, Anoosh, became a hero to her. He had been a political prisoner and lived in exile. Later, Anoosh was arrested again and executed. He was buried in an unmarked grave at Evin Prison.
