People use special labels to name different years in history.

The label AD comes from a Latin phrase. It means "in the year of the Lord." Many people also use the label BC. This stands for "before Christ." These labels help us know if an event happened a long time ago or more recently. They act like a map for time. Using these markers helps everyone understand when things happened in the past.

This system works by picking one central point in time. This point is the birth or conception of Jesus. Years marked AD count forward from that starting point. Years marked BC count backward from that starting point. It is important to know there is no year zero. This means the year AD 1 comes right after 1 BC.

This way of counting makes sure the timeline stays in a steady order.

A monk named Dionysius Exiguus created this system in the year 525. He wanted to make a new calendar for his Easter tables. He did not want to use an old system named after a tyrant named Diocletian. Dionysius used the year 525 to show how many years had passed since Jesus. He did not explain exactly how he chose his starting date. Some think he used math from the Gospels. Others think he used a 532-year cycle used in astronomy.

Even though Dionysius made the system, it was not used everywhere at first. It did not become very common until the 9th century. A famous historian named Bede helped spread the idea in his writings. Later, a powerful leader named Charlemagne helped it grow.

He promoted the system throughout his large empire. This helped the way of counting years spread across Europe. Different countries took a long time to switch to this system. For example, Portugal was one of the last Western European countries to change in 1422.

Today, you might see different labels for these same years. Some people use CE for "Common Era." Others use BCE for "Before the Common Era." These names are meant to be more neutral for everyone. Even with different names, the numbers stay exactly the same.

This means AD 2024 is the same as CE 2024. Understanding these labels helps you read history books more easily. It connects the past to the way we track time today.
