Anne Tyler is a famous American writer of novels and short stories. She is well known for creating characters that feel like real people. Many readers love her books because of her accurate and beautiful details. Her writing style is often called artful and very careful. She has published twenty-five novels during her long career. Some of her most famous books include "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant" and "The Accidental Tourist."

Tyler grew up in a very special way. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1941. Her parents were Quakers who lived in a community called a commune. From age seven to eleven, she lived in Celo, North Carolina. This was a Quaker settlement in the mountains. She did not go to a regular public school there. Instead, she learned things like cooking and carpentry in homes. She also studied through correspondence school.

This unique upbringing helped her become a great observer. Because she lived in a commune, she often felt like an outsider. She believes this feeling helped her start writing. When she moved to Raleigh, she began attending public schools. She discovered many great authors during this time. One writer she loved was Eudora Welty. Welty showed her that stories could be about everyday life.

Tyler went to Duke University to study Russian Literature. She graduated in 1961 at the age of nineteen. While at Duke, she took creative writing classes with Reynolds Price. He thought she was a very mature student. She also enjoyed acting in plays during her college years. Later, she lived in New York City for a short time. She loved riding subways to watch and learn about people.

Her career has brought her many big honors. In 1989, she won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for "Breathing Lessons." She has also won the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her book "A Spool of Blue Thread" was even shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Most of her stories take place in Baltimore, Maryland. She has lived in Baltimore for a very long time.
