Amy Tan is a famous American author. She is best known for her novel, The Joy Luck Club. This book tells eight stories about four Chinese-American mother and daughter pairs.

Many people love her work because it explores the lives of immigrant families. Her stories show both the hard struggles and the big wins of these families. Some people call her writing a jewel because it is so beautiful. Her books have spent forty weeks on the New York Times Bestsellers list.

Writing is a way for Tan to share her own history. She grew up in Oakland, California, as the second of three children. Her parents, John and Daisy Tan, moved to the United States from China. Her father was an electrical engineer and a Baptist minister. He and Amy used to read a thesaurus together to learn words. This helped her learn how to use words to create stories. She wanted to write so she could feel understood.

Tan's path to becoming a famous writer took many steps. Before she wrote books, she worked many odd jobs. She worked as a carhop, a bartender, and even a pizza maker. She also worked as a business writer for big companies like IBM. In 1985, she began writing her first novel while working. She joined a writers' workshop in Olympic Valley, California, to make her draft better. A teacher named Molly Giles helped guide her to finish the book.

Tan has written many different kinds of books over the years. She wrote The Kitchen God's Wife in 1991 to tell more real stories. Her third book was The Hundred Secret Senses, which focused on sisters. She also wrote children's books like The Chinese Siamese Cat. That book became an animated show on PBS. In 2017, she wrote a memoir called Where the Past Begins. This book uses her own photos and journals to tell her life story.

Because of her great work, Tan has won many big awards. She received the National Humanities Medal in 2021. She also won the Carl Sandburg Literary Award that same year. Her stories have even been turned into plays and operas. The Joy Luck Club was made into a film in 1993. Some people have criticized her writing, but Tan says her stories come from her own life. She writes to share her personal experience as a Chinese-American.
