Anne Tyler is a famous writer. She writes novels and short stories. Her books are known for having very real people in them. She uses many small, accurate details to make her stories feel true.

Anne grew up in a Quaker commune. This was a group of homes in North Carolina. She lived there from age seven to eleven. During this time, she helped her family with farming and animals. She did not go to a regular public school. This helped her see the world in a unique way. She often felt like an outsider. She says this feeling helped her become a writer.

Anne went to Duke University. She studied Russian Literature there. She also took classes in creative writing. She loved reading books about everyday life. One writer she liked was Eudora Welty. Welty showed her that books could be about small, daily things.

Anne has written twenty-five novels. Some of her famous books are "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant" and "The Accidental Tourist." She won many awards. One big honor was the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She won this prize in 1989 for her book "Breathing Lessons." She lives in Baltimore and continues to write there.
