Anne Golon was a highly influential French novelist.

She is best known for creating the Angélique series. These historical novels achieved massive global success. Reports indicate the series sold 150 million copies worldwide. This popularity led to several film adaptations. Her work remains a significant part of 20th-century French literature.

The creation of the Angélique books involved a specific collaborative process. Anne Golon served as the primary author of the narratives. Her husband, Serge Golon, performed much of the historical research. This research provided the factual foundation for their stories. When the books were translated into English, publishers combined their names. They used the single name "Sergeanne Golon" for the series. This name represented both the writing and the historical accuracy.

The Angélique series consists of many different volumes. It began with the 1956 novel, *Angélique: Marquise of the Angels*. Other notable titles include *Angélique: The Road to Versailles* from 1958. The series continued through the 1960s with books like *Angélique and the King*. Later installments include *Angélique and the Demon* from 1972. Even after her husband's death, Anne published more volumes. She completed *Angélique and the Ghosts* in 1976. These books helped build a massive, interconnected saga.

Anne Golon's life began in the port city of Toulon, France.

She was born there on December 17, 1921. Her father was a scientist and a captain in the French Navy. From a young age, she showed interest in painting and writing. She published her first novel at age 18 under a pen name. That book was titled *Joëlle d'Anterne*. During World War II, she traveled through France to Spain by bicycle. Later, she worked as a journalist in Africa. It was in Africa in 1947 that she met Serge.

The impact of her work is visible through specific cultural milestones. In the 1960s, a series of five feature films was released. These movies were directed by Bernard Borderie. The actress Michèle Mercier played the lead role of Angélique. Robert Hossein portrayed her husband, Joffrey de Peyrac. These films helped cement the characters in the public imagination. The scale of her success is measured by the 150 million books sold. This number shows how much her stories resonated across different countries.

Anne Golon faced significant personal and professional challenges later in life. In 1972, she traveled to Canada to research new material. That same year, Serge died, leaving her to raise four children alone. She continued writing through these difficult years. By the 1990s, she faced a state of near poverty. This led to a major legal battle against the publisher Hachette. She filed a lawsuit regarding unpaid royalties and copyright abuse. This legal struggle lasted for nearly a decade.

In 2006, Anne reached a significant legal victory. The agreement made her the sole owner of the Angélique series. This resolved the long conflict regarding her intellectual property. Anne Golon lived until July 14, 2017. She passed away in Versailles, France, due to peritonitis. Her life connects the worlds of journalism, historical research, and romantic fiction. She remains a central figure in the history of French novelists.
