Anna Atkins was a scientist from England. She studied plants and took photos. 

Anna used a way to make art called cyanotype. This is a way to make blue prints. A friend of hers invented this process in 1842. Anna used it to show seaweed. She put dried seaweed on special paper. Then she let the sun hit the paper. This made a blue shape of the plant. These shapes are called photograms.

Atkins produced three total volumes of this work between 1843 and 1853. She often replaced plates with better examples if she discovered a superior specimen of a species. 
Atkins' scientific background was shaped by her early life in Tonbridge, Kent. Born in 1799, she was the daughter of John George Children. He was a prominent chemist, mineralogist, and zoologist. Because of his influence, Atkins received a scientific education that was unusual for women in the 19th century. She even produced detailed engravings of shells for her father's work. In 1825, she married John Pelly Atkins and moved to Halstead Place near Sevenoaks. 
Today, the rarity of her published work makes it highly significant. Only 17 known copies of her algae book exist in various states of completeness. These copies are held by prestigious institutions worldwide. The British Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the New York Public Library all hold copies. The Royal Society in London holds a copy with 403 pages and 389 plates. This specific copy is believed to be the only one that remains exactly as Atkins intended. The value of her work is also reflected in historical auctions. One copy sold for £133,500 in 1996, while another sold for £229,250 in 2004.
Beyond her study of algae, Atkins collaborated with her friend Anne Dixon. Together, they produced several presentation albums of cyanotype photograms. These included "Cyanotypes of British and Foreign Ferns" in 1853 and "Cyanotypes of British and Foreign Flowering Plants and Ferns" in 1854. These works showcased her ability to apply photographic techniques to various botanical subjects. Atkins was also a writer of fiction, publishing five novels between 1852 and 1863. 
Atkins' legacy connects the fields of botany, photography, and book publishing. Her work predates the first commercially published photographically illustrated book, "The Pencil of Nature," by only eight months. She demonstrated how new technology could serve scientific documentation. In 1865, she donated her collection of dried plants to the British Museum. She died at Halstead Place in 1871 at the age of 72. Her contributions continue to be celebrated in museums and even through digital tributes like Google Doodles.
