Some dinosaurs had hard armor.

Ankylosauria is a group of plant-eating dinosaurs.

These dinosaurs were big and heavy. They walked on four short, strong legs. They lived low to the ground. Most stayed below one meter tall while eating. They ate plants like ferns and cycads. They had long, flexible tongues to help them eat. They could even breathe while they chewed!
Ankylosaurs first appeared in North Africa. They lived until the end of the Late Cretaceous period. Two main families lived in the Northern Hemisphere. These were Nodosauridae and Ankylosauridae. They lived in North America, Europe, and Asia. Some other groups lived in the south. These lived in South America, Australia, and Antarctica. Scientists first named this group in 1923.

Ankylosauria is a group of plant-eating dinosaurs known for their incredible protection.

These dinosaurs worked in a very special way to eat and breathe. They were built low to the ground on four short, strong legs. Most stayed below one meter tall while they fed on plants. They ate things like ferns, cycads, and angiosperms. They had long, flexible tongues to help them move food. A special part of their mouth helped them breathe while they chewed.
Scientists have been studying these armored giants for a long time. Henry Fairfield Osborn first named the group in 1923.
There are many important facts about where they lived and when. Ankylosaurs first appeared in North Africa during the Middle Jurassic. They lived all the way until the end of the Late Cretaceous. Two main families, Nodosauridae and Ankylosauridae, lived in the Northern Hemisphere. These animals were found in North America, Europe, and Asia. Other groups, like Parankylosauria, lived in the south. These were found in South America, Australia, and Antarctica.
Learning about ankylosaurs helps us see how different animals adapt. Just as a turtle uses a shell for safety, these dinosaurs used bony shields. Their armor was made of many small parts. Some were rectangular or oval plates called scutes. Others were smaller nodules that filled the gaps. Even their skulls had bony shields that fused together.
Ankylosauria is a major group of herbivorous dinosaurs within the clade Ornithischia. These animals are most famous for their heavy body armor, which consisted of bony plates known as osteoderms. These osteoderms functioned much like the shells of modern turtles.

The armor of an ankylosaur was a complex system of different parts. Most of the body was covered in scutes, which are rectangular or oval bony plates. These scutes were often arranged in rows from side to side. Many scutes featured a central ridge called a keel. Smaller bony nodules filled the gaps between these larger plates to ensure there were no weak spots.
Ankylosaurs were physically built for a life of low-level grazing. They were bulky quadrupeds, meaning they walked on four legs. Their limbs were short but very powerful to support their heavy weight. Most of these dinosaurs lived only about one foot off the ground. They primarily fed on vegetation at or below a height of one meter. Their diet included plants such as ferns, cycads, and angiosperms.
Scientists have worked for decades to classify these armored dinosaurs. Henry Fairfield Osborn first named the group Ankylosauria in 1923. Earlier, in 1908, Barnum Brown described the Ankylosauridae family. Brown initially suggested they had a "strongly curved" back, though we now know they had flat backs. In 1997, Kenneth Carpenter proposed an informal definition for the group. He defined them as all ornithischians closer to Ankylosaurus than to Stegosaurus. Paul Sereno refined this definition in 2005 using specific type species. Later, in 2021, Madzia and colleagues formalized the group using the PhyloCode system.
The history of ankylosaur evolution is a subject of ongoing research. They are considered a close group of stegosaurs within the Eurypoda clade. Both groups share the presence of osteoderms in their skin. However, they followed different evolutionary paths. While stegosaurs developed raised plates, ankylosaurs evolved toward increased armor and a more consolidated carapace. The origin of the group is still poorly understood. Only a few specimens from the Middle Jurassic have been found.
Ankylosaurs were found across many different parts of the world. They first appeared in North Africa during the Middle Jurassic. They persisted in various forms until the end of the Late Cretaceous. The two primary families, Nodosauridae and Ankylosauridae, mostly lived in the Northern Hemisphere. This includes regions in North America, Europe, and Asia. Other groups, such as the Parankylosauria, lived in the southern landmass of Gondwana. These southern dinosaurs were found in South America, Australia, and Antarctica.
Understanding Ankylosauria helps scientists study how animals adapt to their environments. Their specialized anatomy shows a clear connection between protection and survival. Their ability to breathe while eating and digest food through fermentation shows complex biological systems. Even their sounds were unique. A 2023 study of the fossil Pinacosaurus grangeri suggests they might have made bird-like vocalizations. These sounds were likely produced low in the trachea and modified higher up. By studying these armored giants, we learn how specialized life forms can thrive for millions of years.
