He lived during a period of intense political change in England. His work includes metaphysical poetry, which uses complex ideas and metaphors. He also wrote sharp satires to criticize social and political corruption. Marvell served in the House of Commons for many years. He is remembered as a man of great integrity and skill. His writings offer a deep look into the 17th century.

Marvell's career involved several distinct professional roles. He began as a tutor for members of the aristocracy. This included tutoring the daughter of Lord General Fairfax.

Later, he became a tutor to William Dutton, the ward of Oliver Cromwell. In 1657, he joined the famous poet John Milton in official service. Marvell served as a Latin secretary to Cromwell's Council of State. This position earned him a salary of £200 per year. This income provided him with a level of financial security.

His political life was defined by his service to the people of Hull. Marvell was elected as a Member of Parliament for Kingston upon Hull. He served in the Third Protectorate Parliament starting in 1659. He was also elected to the Convention Parliament in 1660. Later, he served in the Cavalier Parliament in 1661. During his parliamentary sittings, he was paid 6 shillings and 8 pence per day. These funds came from the contributions of his constituency. He remained a representative for Hull until his death.

Marvell's poetry moved through many different styles and subjects. He wrote famous love songs such as "To His Coy Mistress." He also wrote poems about nature and estates, like "The Garden" and "Upon Appleton House." His political poems often responded to the major events of his time. For example, "An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland" addressed the political shifts of 1650. He also wrote satires like "Flecknoe" and "The Character of Holland." These works used wit to comment on the world around him.

As a satirist, Marvell used his pen to attack political corruption. He often wrote these biting verses in manuscript form. This was because his topics were too sensitive for public printing. One notable example is "Last Instructions to a Painter," written in 1667. This long poem used an imaginary painter to critique the government. It described a state lacking a proper navy and led by dishonest officials. The contemporary official Samuel Pepys noted that the poem was "too sharp and so true."

Marvell also engaged in political debate through anonymous prose. He wrote pamphlets to defend religious dissenters and criticize censorship. One important work was "An Account of the Growth of Popery and Arbitrary Government in England." Published in 1677, this pamphlet was highly influential. It warned that the government was changing toward absolute tyranny. He also wrote works like "The Rehearsal Transpros'd" to criticize specific individuals. These writings helped shape the political discussions of his era.

Marvell's life ended suddenly in August 1678. He died while attending a meeting of his former constituents in Hull. Because his health had been good, some people theorized he was poisoned. However, this theory remains unproven. He was buried in the church of St. Giles-in-the-Fields in London. His monument was built by his grateful constituents in Hull. They described him as a man of wisdom, dexterity, and courage. His legacy remains visible through his poetry and his historical impact.
