Ancient Egyptian religion was a very complex system of beliefs. It lasted for about 3,500 years. People believed in many different gods, known as polytheism. There are about 1,500 known deities from this time.

These gods were thought to control the world. People used prayer and offerings to gain favor from them. This way of life was part of everything they did.

Religious life worked in a few different ways. Formal practice centered on the pharaohs, who were the rulers. People believed these leaders had divine powers. The pharaoh acted as a bridge between people and gods.

Their job was to maintain Ma'at, which means cosmic order. This helped keep away Isfet, or chaos. Regular people also used magic or prayer for help. They had their own ways to talk to the gods.

The roots of these beliefs go back to prehistory. Some evidence comes from very early burials.

These early people seemed to believe in an afterlife. They even buried animals during this time. This might be why some gods had animal shapes. For example, the goddess Hathor was a cow.

The god Min was also a very old figure. He was a god of fertility. Scholars think many of these ideas came from Africa.

Different gods became more important at different times. During the Old Kingdom, the sun god Ra became very powerful.

Later, in the Middle Kingdom, the god Amun grew in fame. In the New Kingdom, Amun and Ra were often linked together.

One pharaoh named Akhenaten tried something very different. He wanted people to worship only one god called the Aten. He moved the capital to a new city named Amarna.

These beliefs changed the way people lived and died. They believed the soul could survive after death.

To help, they built great tombs and left goods inside. This included things like grave goods and special offerings. Eventually, the old religion began to fade away. This happened after the Romans conquered Egypt in 30 BC.

People then began to follow Christianity and later Islam. By the 530s, the ancient religion was considered fully dead.
