They called it Carthage. People from a place called Tyre moved there around 814 BC. These people were called Phoenicians. They were very good at sailing and trade. Carthage grew into a huge empire. It had many lands near the sea.

The city was very rich. It had many big ships. These ships carried goods across the sea. Carthage also had a strong army. Many different people fought in their army. They had many new ideas, too. They made things like glass and used new tools.

But Carthage had rivals. The most famous rival was Rome. The two sides fought in the Punic Wars. These were big and difficult battles. In 146 BC, the Romans won. They destroyed the city of Carthage.

Later, the Romans built a new city in that same place. Much of what we know comes from Greek and Roman writers. We also learn from old things found in the ground. These finds help us see how life was in Carthage.
