This reaction affects many parts of the body. It often causes an itchy red rash or hives on the skin. It can make the tongue or throat swell. This makes it hard to breathe. Some people feel dizzy or faint. They may also have stomach pain or vomit.

Many things can trigger this reaction. Common causes include food like nuts, milk, or fish. Insect stings can also cause it. Some medicines, like certain antibiotics, are triggers too. Even exercise or cold temperatures can cause it in some people.

Inside the body, special white blood cells react to these triggers. They let out chemicals called mediators. These chemicals cause the swelling and changes in the body.

If this happens, you must get medical help right away. Doctors often use a medicine called epinephrine. This is given as an injection into a muscle.
