Two white actors created the show. Their names were Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll. They used their voices to play many different parts. Gosden played Amos Jones and George "Kingfish" Stevens. Correll played Andrew "Andy" Hogg Brown. They even played over 170 different male characters! To make it sound real, they moved near or far from the microphone. This helped listeners imagine a group of friends talking together.

Before this show, the two men worked in different ways. They met in Durham, North Carolina, in 1920. By 1925, they were performing on radio stations in Chicago. They even worked for a station where they only got free meals! They wanted to find better jobs in radio and on stage. They eventually moved to station WMAQ in 1928. This move helped them start the successful Amos 'n' Andy series.

Many interesting things happened during the show's long run. In 1929, the show became available to many more stations. This was called syndication, which was a new idea then. By 1930, the show was so popular that it reached 40 million listeners. People even bought tin wind-up toys of the characters.

The show lasted on the radio until 1960. It also moved to television from 1951 to 1953. On TV, Black actors played most of the roles instead of the original creators.

This program changed how people told stories on the radio. It moved away from broad stage acting to a more quiet style. The creators focused on how people act in real life. They showed characters with different personalities and feelings. The stories celebrated things like friendship, hard work, and common sense. Even though the show used old stereotypes, it had a lot of depth. It remains a very important part of radio history.
