Amojjar Pass

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Amojjar Pass is a way through the hills. It sits in the Adrar Plateau. This area is in the center of Mauritania. It is near a place called Atar.

The rocks in the pass are pink and brown. They are made of sandstone. This rock was worn away over time. Very dry weather hits the land. Then, heavy rain falls. This rain wears the rocks down. Small loose rocks sit at the bottom of the steep walls. This is called scree.

Very few plants grow here. Most places are too dry. But acacia trees can live there. These trees can handle a drought, which means a long time with no rain.

The pass is a very important link for travel. It provides a roadway for cars and trucks. This road connects the capital city, Nouakchott, to other towns. It helps people reach Ouadane and Chinguetti.

Near the pass, you can find old art. These are rock paintings from the Neolithic time. They are at a place called Agrour Amogjar. This is just northeast of Atar.
