The American lobster is a fascinating creature found along the Atlantic coast of North America.

It lives in cold, shallow waters from Labrador down to New Jersey. This lobster is quite a record-breaker. It is the heaviest crustacean in the world. It is also the heaviest of all living arthropod species.

Most of these lobsters are bluish green or brown. This color comes from a mix of yellow, blue, and red pigments in their shells. They like to hide among rocks on the ocean floor. They usually live at depths of about 20 to 70 meters.

Lobsters have a very interesting way of sensing their world. They use their antennae to find smells in the water.

The tips of these antennae have tiny hairs with nerve cells. These hairs can detect odors in the water. Larger hairs help control the water flow over the sensory hairs. This helps the lobster find the direction of a smell. It works much like how humans use ears to find a sound.

Lobsters also use scents to talk to each other. They release scents in their urine to share information. They do this to find a mate or to warn a rival.

Learning about lobsters involves looking at their unique bodies.

They have two large claws that are not the same size. One is a crusher claw with rounded parts to break food. The other is a cutter or gripper claw with sharp edges. This second claw is used for holding or tearing prey. Whether the big crusher claw is on the left or right side determines if the lobster is left or right "handed."

Their diet includes many things like mussels, clams, and snails. They also eat crabs, small fish, and even algae.

Sometimes, people find lobsters with very rare colors.

A blue lobster happens about once in 2 million catches. This is caused by a genetic mutation. This mutation makes the lobster produce too much of a certain protein. This protein works with a molecule called astaxanthin to turn the shell blue.

Other colors are even rarer. A yellow lobster appears about once in 30 million.

Yellow-lobster

An albino lobster, which has no color at all, is found once in 100 million.

Some lobsters even show two different colors on each side of their body. This split color happens once in 50 million lobsters.

When they hatch, they become tiny larvae called metanauplius. These larvae are transparent and have large eyes.

They must grow and molt many times to become adults. Only 1 in 1,000 larvae survive to become young lobsters.

Eventually, they sink to the bottom to live their adult lives.
