Its main headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The group is made of many smaller parts called posts. These posts are found in every state and U.S. territory. There are even posts located overseas. Members work together to help other veterans and serve their communities. They also talk to leaders in the government to make sure veterans get the help they need.

Members of the Legion stay active in many different ways. They often help out at Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals and clinics. This work helps people who served in the military stay healthy. The group also takes part in U.S. politics to support veterans. They use a method called lobbying to ask for things like pensions. A pension is money given to people to help them live. They also work to support the Veterans Health Administration. One of their biggest wins was helping pass the G.I. Bill in 1944.

History shows that soldiers often form groups after big wars. After the Civil War, groups like the Grand Army of the Republic were formed. After the Spanish-American War, the Veterans of Foreign Wars began. The American Legion started because of World War I. In late 1918, the war ended, but many soldiers were still stuck in Europe. They were waiting many weeks or months to go home. This made many people feel unhappy or lost.

Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt Jr. had an idea to help. He was the eldest son of President Theodore Roosevelt. In January 1919, he talked with George A. White about a new group. They wanted to include all members of the American Expeditionary Forces. They also wanted to include people serving in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. On February 15, 1919, a group of 20 officers met in Paris. They met at the YMCA to plan how to help soldiers.

The group officially formed during a meeting in Paris from March 15 to 17, 1919. About one thousand officers and enlisted men attended this meeting. They chose the name "The American Legion" from a list of many options. The U.S. Congress gave the group an official charter on September 16, 1919. The very first post in the U.S. was in Van Tassell, Wyoming. It was named after a man named Branstetter who died in the war. Another early post was in Washington, D.C., but it later changed its name.
