sports Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The America's Cup is a famous boat race. It is the oldest international sport competition still running today. This race is a big test for many people. It tests sailing skill and boat design. It also tests how well teams can manage money.

Two yacht clubs take part in the match. One club is the defender. They hold the trophy. The other club is the challenger. They try to win the cup. If the challenger wins, they become the new defender. Often, many clubs want to race. They hold a series of races to find one official challenger.

The trophy is a silver cup. People call it the Auld Mug. It was made in 1848. The first race happened in 1851 near England. A boat named America won that first race. The New York Yacht Club held the cup for a very long time. They won 24 times in a row. Finally, a team from Australia won in 1983. This ended a very long winning streak. Modern teams spend a lot of money to win. Some teams spend hundreds of millions of dollars.
