Sailors can race in many ways. Some races are in a group. These big events are called regattas. A regatta has many separate races. The crew with the best total score wins.

Some races are short and stay near the land. Other races go far out into the open ocean. Some sailors even sail all the way around the world!

There are different ways to compete. In match racing, only two boats race each other. The goal is to finish before the other boat. In team racing, two teams of three boats compete. In fleet racing, hundreds of boats can race at once. The Barcolana is the largest race in the world. It has over 16,000 sailors!

Rules help make the races fair. Sometimes, all boats must be the same size. This is called one-design racing. This lets the skill of the crew matter most. Most races are open to both men and women. Many people of all ages love to sail together.
