The death cap is a very dangerous fungus.

It is the most poisonous mushroom known to people. In fact, it is the deadliest mushroom in the entire world. It is responsible for 90% of all deaths from mushrooms every year. Only half of one mushroom can contain enough toxin to kill an adult human. This mushroom has even been linked to the deaths of famous leaders. These include the Roman Emperor Claudius in AD 54 and Emperor Charles VI in 1740.

This mushroom has a very specific way it works. It contains a group of toxins called amatoxins.

The main part is a toxin named alpha-amanitin. This toxin stops a vital enzyme called RNA polymerase II from working. This enzyme is needed to make messenger RNA. Without this, cells cannot make the proteins they need to live. Because of this, the cells stop working and die. This mostly hurts the liver and the kidneys first.

The toxins are also very tough. They do not change even if you cook or freeze them.

People have studied this mushroom for a long time. The name comes from Latin used in letters between Thomas Browne and Christopher Merrett. A French botanist named Sébastien Vaillant described it in 1727. He used a long phrase to describe its green color and shape. In 1833, Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link settled on the name Amanita phalloides. This name is used by scientists today. The mushroom is the type species for a group called Amanita section Phalloideae. This group includes other deadly mushrooms known as destroying angels.

There are many facts about how the death cap looks. The cap can be 5 to 15 cm across. It can be pale green, olive, or even white.

The cap is often sticky when it is wet. It has white gills and a white stem called a stipe. At the bottom of the stem, there is a white, sac-like base called a volva. This volva can be hidden by leaves on the ground. When it is young, the mushroom looks like a white egg. As it grows, the egg shape breaks to reveal the cap.

It is easy to see why this mushroom is so tricky. The death cap looks like many mushrooms that are safe to eat.

For example, it can look like the edible Caesar's mushroom or the straw mushroom. People might also mistake it for a puffball when it is young. The death cap is native to Europe. It grew in many places like Scandinavia, Italy, and Greece. Later, it moved to North America and Australia. It often traveled on the roots of trees that people moved for farming.
