Many people love his work because it changed how authors use words. He showed that poetry could feel like a story.

Writing prose poetry is a unique way to work. Instead of using traditional rhyming patterns, the writer uses the flow of regular sentences. Bertrand used this style to create vivid images in his mind. He focused on deep feelings and strange, beautiful scenes. His writing often felt like a dream or a dark night. This method allowed him to explore new ideas in French literature. It made his poems stand out from the work of others.

Louis Jacques Napoléon Bertrand was born in Ceva on April 20, 1807. His parents, Georges and Laure Bertrand, came from a family of soldiers. His father was a gendarmerie lieutenant. Although his parents wanted him to be a priest, he chose a different path. He studied at the collège royal of Dijon from 1818 to 1826. During this time, he grew to love the city of Dijon. He later worked for several newspapers, including Le Provincial and Patriote de la Côte-d'Or.

Bertrand's life had many hard moments and changes. He moved to Paris in November 1828 to find more success. He faced money troubles and became very sick with tuberculosis. He spent time in hospitals like Notre-Dame de la Pitié and l'hôpital Saint-Antoine. Sadly, he died in a hospital on April 29, 1841. His masterpiece, Gaspard de la Nuit, was published in November 1842. This happened after he had passed away. The first edition only sold 20 copies.

Even though he died young, his ideas reached many people. The famous writer Charles Baudelaire said Bertrand influenced his own work. Another writer, Stéphane Mallarmé, found great inspiration in him. Music and art also celebrate his talent. The composer Maurice Ravel wrote three difficult piano pieces based on the poems. The painter René Magritte even named a painting after the book. Today, a street in Dijon is named after him to honor his life.
